In his youth, Walter Andreas Kirchner wrote poetry and actually wanted to be a writer. After graduating from the Nikolaus Lenau Lyceum in Timișoara ( German  Temeswar ), he wanted to study philology . He was also active as a hobby musician. After discovering his talent for the fine arts, he trained as a sculptor between 1964 and 1967 at the Timișoara School of Art . The Romanian authorities largely denied him a scholarship with Fritz Wotruba in Vienna and the opportunity to exhibit abroad. After seven years of art education in Cisnădie, he was dismissed because he wanted to move to Germany with his family. In the six years that followed, while waiting for an exit permit, he worked as a designer in an industrial company in Timișoara.

In 1981 Walter Andreas Kirchner moved to Pforzheim . Since 1982 he has been a member of the professional association of visual artists and since 1985 a member of the Esslingen Artists' Guild .
