Mosque and Synagogue Keizerstraat (2006)

The Keizerstraat mosque and synagogue are in a peaceful neighborhood in Paramaribo , Suriname .

mosque

The mosque is the headquarters of the Lahore Ahmadiyya movement (Ahmadiyya Andschuman Ischat-i-Islam Lahore) and is also the seat of the owner, the Surinaamse Islamitische Vereniging (SIV).

The foundation stone for the first wooden mosque was laid in 1929. More than 60 years later, the current mosque was built.

synagogue

Immediately next to it is the “Neve Shalom” (House of Peace) synagogue . After more and more Jews had settled in and around Paramaribo next to the center of the Jewish community - the Jodensavanne - there was also a need for a house of prayer here. In 1716, the colonial administration made a plot of land at Keizerstraat 82 available for this purpose. The wooden synagogue, inaugurated in 1720, was replaced by today's synagogue, which was built from stone from 1835 to 1837.
