Transsylvania Phoenix , but mostly just called Phoenix , is a Romanian band . The members are Nicu Covaci , Josef Kappl , Mircea Baniciu, Flavius Hosu, Mani Neumann, Cristi Gram and Ionuț Contraș.
Band history
In 1962 the school band "Sfinții" ("The Saints") was founded by Nicu Covaci in Timișoara . Due to the accusation of doing religious propaganda, the band was forced to change their name in 1965 and was called "PHOENIX" from then on. Initially the band played in the cafeteria of the polytechnic university and later in the union club "Lola". 1968 PHOENIX wins the Grand Prix of the Romanian Student Festival in Iași. The first record deal comes about. At the time, PHOENIX was also often referred to as the Romanian answer to Jethro Tull . Despite the award of various prizes for creativity and interpretation at Romanian student festivals in Bucharest, a performance ban followed in 1970 due to the tense domestic political situation. Now the band has achieved success in Czechoslovakia and Poland at various music festivals. 1974 frontman Covaci goes into exile in Amsterdam and renounces Romanian citizenship. In 1977 he helped his bandmates to escape into German exile in " Marshall " boxes from Romania.
After the unsuccessful attempt to gain a foothold musically in Germany, the group split up, but started a comeback in 1988 with the old line-up and toured Germany. In 1990 Phoenix made their comeback in Romania. In 2000 the CD În umbra marelui urs (“In the shadow of the big bear”) is released and a tour of Germany follows. In 2001, In the shadow of the bear, an English version of În umbra marelui urs , sung by Malcolm J. Lewis, a former member of Black Sabbath , was released.
In 2005 the album Baba Novak followed , which the band recorded in their founding line-up. On January 14, 2011, the founding member Béla Kamocsa (born December 24, 1944 in Oradea ) died of cancer in Timișoara .
