Hartwig Michels

Hartwig Gerhard Michels (born November 10, 1941 , Brașov , Kingdom of Romania ; † February 5, 2020 in Nuremberg ) was a German inventor of air cushion transporters and an entrepreneur .

Life

Hartwig Michels was the son of the engineer Josef Michels . He attended the Nikolaus Lenau Lyceum in Timișoara , after which he completed an apprenticeship as an iron lathe operator and locksmith. Michels then studied engineering at the Timișoara Polytechnic "Traian Vuia" and received his doctorate in 1976 with Vasile Berindei .

Michels and his family first emigrated from Romania to Austria, later he moved to Nuremberg. There he initially researched metal air and later multifluid cushions and published specialist papers on this. In 1983 he and his school friend Knut Klingler founded the DELU Luftkissen Transportgerätetechnik GmbH in Nuremberg , which in 2011 offered over 80 different types and sizes of air cushions in the load range from 0.2 to 80 tons and employed around 50 people. Michels held around 60 patents and protected utility models in 2011. In 1988 he received the gold medal at the International Exhibition of Ideas-Inventions-Novelties in Nuremberg for his air cushion systems .

Michels came from the Banat Swabian ethnic group and was the father of two daughters, including Karin Michels-Rautenstrauß , who is also part of the company's management.
