Erich Pfaff (2009)

Erich Pfaff (born March 21, 1930 in Timișoara , Kingdom of Romania ; † June 20, 2011 in Ingolstadt ) was a Romanian headmaster and politician from the German-speaking minority of the Banat Swabians . He was the first chairman of the Democratic Forum of Germans in the Banat and for many years head of the Nikolaus Lenau Lyceum in Timișoara.

Life

With the first post-war graduate class, Erich Pfaff passed the Abitur at the German-speaking Nikolaus-Lenau-Lyzeum in Timișoara in the school year 1948/49 . He then studied geography at the Babes Bolyai University in Cluj . In 1953 he returned to the Nikolaus-Lenau-Lyzeum as a junior geography teacher. In 1957 Pfaff published the volume ships, reeds and rails in the Bucharest Jugendverlag . From 1965 to 1992 he was director of the lyceum with short interruptions. In addition, he taught as a professor of architectural history at the building faculty of the Timișoara Polytechnic University .

In 1968 Pfaff founded the German department of the adult education center in Timișoara. A Universitate Populară with classes in Romanian was founded in the early 1960s. The lectures of the German adult education center were held in the ballroom of the Nikolaus-Lenau-Lyceum, initially monthly, later every two weeks, and from 1972 finally weekly with a wide range of topics from literature, music, architecture, geography, local history, natural sciences and other areas. Because of the great interest, the lectures were repeated two times a week from 1973 and sometimes even four times a week from 1974. Erich Pfaff was not only the founder and organizer, but also the main speaker and thus brought several thousand lectures.

After the Romanian Revolution in 1989 , he was the first chairman of the Democratic Forum of Germans in the Banat from 1990 to 1992 and for a short time also a member of the Romanian parliament. In 1992 Erich Pfaff retired and moved to Herford . Since then he has given over 800 lectures (as of 2008) on the subject of star architects of the 20th and 21st centuries in adult education centers, church parishes or senior citizens' residences .
