Life

Stefan Heinz attended the Realgymnasium in Timișoara (1924–1928) and the local German Catholic Teacher Training Institute (1928–1932) at the Banatia . He then worked as a teacher in Lenauheim (1933-1934), Timiş district and from 1935 to 1941 as a cantor teacher in Aluniş ( German  Traunau ) in the Arad district . After Romania's entry into World War II , he was called up for military service, which he served as a sergeant in the Romanian army on the Eastern Front . After his return in 1943 he took over the office of school inspector for the German primary schools in Romania . After Romania switched sides to the Allies and the Red Army marched into the Banat at the end of 1944, he was able to avoid the deportations of the Romanian Germans by going into hiding and hiding in Lenauheim and Kleinsanktpeter for a year . In the post-war years he was excluded from school service for political reasons and made his way as a linen weaver , day laborer , businessman and private teacher . In 1947 he again got a job as a teacher at the denominational school in Bărăteaz ( German  Baratzhausen ).

On February 1, 1953, he became a member of the ensemble of the newly founded German State Theater in Timisoara (DSTT). Here he worked under the pseudonym Hans Kehrer as an actor and as a playwright . Outstanding is his stage work Zwei Schwestern, a Swabian Passion , which synthesizes the dramatic fate of the Romanian Germans in the 20th century like no other. The play was staged twice in Timișoara, then recorded as a television film and performed several times at domestic and foreign guest performances and festivals . From 1953 to 1973 he worked as an actor and at the same time translated Romanian plays into the German language . He also helped direct amateur theater groups in the Banat villages.

In addition to classic roles, he preferred to play the figure of cousin Matz von Hopsenitz , the slightly old-fashioned, but self-confident, funny and also self-critical Swabian farmer. With this role he became the most popular personality among the Danube Swabians in the Banat. As cousin Matz , he provided popular entertainment on the German-language program on Bucharest TV in dialect.

In 1980 he left for Germany (Bielefeld). In 2001 he received the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class for his services in promoting Banat German culture in his old and new homeland.

In Germany he wrote the play Anno 1525 - Peasants' War in Allgäu for the local open-air theater on behalf of the city of Altusried . Around 124,000 spectators saw the 29 performances, in which up to 500 actors took part.

Stefan Heinz was a member of the Social Democratic Party. He died on December 18, 2009 at the age of 96 in Berlin .
