Heinrich Schubkegel (born April 5, 1938 in Șemlacu Mic , German  Semlak , Kingdom of Romania , † March 16, 1991 in Wangen im Allgäu ) was a German teacher and general school inspector in the Romanian Ministry of Education and Culture.

Life

Schubkegel came from the Banat Swabian ethnic group and was the only child of the farmer Heinrich Schubkegel and his wife Susanna nee. Pinczes. In Semlak he first attended elementary school, then grades 5 - 7, partly in Periam (German Perjamosch ) (German-speaking), partly in Șemlacu Mic (Romanian-speaking). From 1951 to 1955 he was trained as a primary school teacher at the German Pedagogical Institute in Aradul Nou ( New Arad ). For a year he taught Russian, geography and music at the school in Vladimirescu ( Glogowatz ). From 1956 he studied German and Romanian at the Philological Faculty of the Pedagogical University in Timișoara ( Timisoara ) and graduated with a state examination at the end of June 1961, with which he acquired the qualification to teach German and Romanian at Romanian high schools.

After brief teaching assignments in Crizbav ( Krebsdorf ) and Hălchiu ( Heldsdorf ) in Transylvania , he returned to the Banat and settled in Peciu Nou ( Ulmbach or Neupetsch ). Here he worked from 1964 to 1973 as a music teacher, choir director, German teacher and deputy headmaster of the local high school. During this time he also worked as a writer and editor for the Neue Banater Zeitung , but also as an actor in the Neupetsch folk art ensemble. At the German State Theater Timişoara Schubkegel played the title role in the play "The Night Watchman". During this time he earned his diploma as an assistant director . Together with Herbert Weiss , the director of the chamber choir in Peciu Nou, he expanded his activities to include the Schubert choir Timisoara . Weiss later became the director of the choir.

At the end of 1970 Schubkegel married the music teacher Anni Seeler nee. Stretch. In 1972 and 1973 the two daughters Friederike Heidi and Christiane Ute were born. In 1971 the Schubkegel couple received the first prize awarded by the daily newspaper Neuer Weg in the folk dance category as part of the annual “Neupetscher Swabian costume festival”. Schubkegel organized and gave lectures on popular science, was in the meantime Vice Mayor of the town and a member of the People's Council. As a goalkeeper Schubkegel reached the championship title of the Timiș district with the Neupetsch handball team .

In autumn 1973 Schubkegel was appointed to succeed the retired general school inspector Jakob Neumann at the Romanian Ministry for Education and Culture in Bucharest and was responsible for teaching in German schools and the German departments at Romanian schools. It is noteworthy that he was not a member of the Romanian Communist Party .

In the following years, the Romanian nationalism of the government under Nicolae Ceaușescu was also noticeable in school policy. The number of German schools, which had already shrunk anyway, and the number of pupils approved for German classes were questioned and reduced year after year. Heinrich Schubkegel had the backing of the Council of Working People of German Nationality in Romania and its deputy chairman Nikolaus Berwanger and knew how to negotiate skilfully with the relevant authorities. The country's anti-national policy and the rampant mood among the Romanian population ultimately led the Schubkegel couple to leave the country. Anni Schubkegel did not return to Romania after visiting her uncle in the USA , but moved to Germany in July 1979. As a result, Heinrich Schubkegel was dismissed from the position of general school inspector. From 1979 to 1981 he found a job at the Nikolaus-Lenau-Lyceum in Timișoara. He barely survived a serious traffic accident in December 1979. In October 1981 he was able to leave Romania and moved to live with his wife in Wangen im Allgäu .

In the course of the equality procedure with graduates of German universities, he studied history and social studies at the Weingarten University of Education from 1983 to 1985 . First he worked as a German teacher for foreigners at the Humboldt Institute in Ratzenried Castle in Argenbühl , then at a summer academy for foreigners in Meersburg . Since August 13, 1982, Schubkegel also worked as a teacher at the secondary school in Leutkirch im Allgäu . On May 22, 1983, he was elected chairman of the " Heimatortsgemeinschaft Semlak". In this function he took part in the cultural meetings of the Banat Swabians , the “ Danube Swabian Teachers”, the “Adam Müller Guttenbrunn Society” and others. He repeatedly organized donations for those in need in Romania and drove aid transports to the Banat. On his last trip with relief supplies, which took him to Recaș , Lugoj , Hunedoara and Geoagiu , Schubkegel contracted a severe flu, which he died of on March 16, 1991. He was buried on March 20 in the cemetery in Wangen.
