life and work

Fassel's father, Stefan, was an academic and died on April 30, 1944 in the Crimea during World War II . Stefan Fassel had two children with his wife Irene , Heike (born January 25, 1944) and Horst Fassel. In 1948 Irene married the actor and opera singer Hans Mokka , with whom Horst Fassel had a loose relationship after the death of his mother in 1973.

Horst Fassel studied German and Romanian Studies from 1960 to 1965 at the Faculty of Philology at the Babeș-Bolyai University in Cluj . From 1965 to 1981 Horst Fassel worked as a professor at the University of Alexandru Ioan Cuza Iași . In 1978 he received his doctorate in philology.

In 1981 he submitted an application to leave the country and in 1983 was allowed to move to the Federal Republic of Germany . Here he initially worked as a proofreader at Rombach Verlag Freiburg. From 1985 to 1987 Fassel was editor-in-chief of the German-language newspaper Banater Post . From 1987 onwards, Fassel worked as a research assistant at the Institute for Danube Swabian History and Regional Studies at the University of Tübingen , and from 1989 also worked as an honorary managing director until 2007. From 2004 to 2006 he was chairman of the Society for Research into the History of German-Language Theater Abroad Thalia Germanica . As chairman of the Adam Müller Guttenbrunn Society , Fassel, who spoke Romanian, Hungarian, French, English and Italian, was editor of the magazine Banatica from 1984 to 1987 and its editor-in-chief since 1987.

In 2010, Herta Müller suspected Horst Fassel, among other things , of having acted as a contact person for the Romanian secret service Securitate , code-named Filip , and demanded external expertise in the investigation. Further allegations about Fassel's entanglement with the Securitate came from the director of the Literaturhaus Berlin Ernest Wichner and the writer Richard Wagner .
