The Institute for Danube Swabian History and Regional Studies (IDGL) is a research institute of the state of Baden-Württemberg . It was founded on July 1, 1987 and is based in Tübingen . However, it does not belong to the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen , but is directly subordinate to the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of the Interior .

Research focus

The IDGL researches the history of the settlement of Eastern and Southeastern Europe by Germans, especially by Danube Swabians . In addition to linguistic and literary approaches, demographic and ethnic aspects are also pursued. In addition, the fate of the refugees and displaced persons who found acceptance in Baden-Württemberg after the Second World War is also considered .

The institute has its own library with over 30,000 monographs and around 500 periodicals. There is also a separate archive. In addition to the actual research, the IDGL also holds courses and issues publications.

The IDGL publishes its own series, the series of the Institute for Danube Swabian History and Regional Studies .

The historian Mathias Beer is the deputy director .

Center for German History and Culture in Southeast Europe

The IDGL is also the seat of the '' Center for German History and Culture in Southeastern Europe '' (short: ZDGS ). This was founded in 2011 to make research on this topic more visible. In addition to the IDGL, the Ludwig Uhland Institute for Empirical Cultural Studies (LUI) and the Institute for Eastern European History and Regional Studies were involved in the establishment. In the work, the focus is on cultural diversity, complexity and interdependencies, which is why related research is also thematically considered, for example more general migration research or research on the history of Southeast Europe . The historian Mathias Beer is also the speaker of the ZDGS .
