The Austrian literary journal Literature and Criticism was founded in April 1966 by Rudolf Henz , Gerhard Fritsch , and Paul Kruntorad as a successor to the literary organ Word in der Zeit , which has existed since 1955 . Otto Müller Verlag in Salzburg has been responsible for the sheet since the beginning . Karl-Markus Gauß has been running the magazine since 1991 .

profile

According to a study by the German scholar Renate Langer, the magazine was originally conceived as the "semi-official literary magazine of the country [Austria]" and funded with public funds from the start. This reputation clung to the paper until the end of the 1980s. When Karl-Markus Gauß took over the editing role in 1991, more space was given to younger Austrian literature, as well as to the literature of Central and Eastern European countries.

Since it was founded, literature and criticism has been published by Otto Müller Verlag in Salzburg , and since the 1990s in five double issues per year. The literary scholar and Germanist Klaus Zeyringer counts it among the "most interesting and rich literary magazines in the German-speaking world" . The edition is 4,000 pieces (as of 2007).

The management of the magazine was transferred first to Jeannie Ebner and then to Kurt Klinger . In 1991 Karl-Markus Gauß took over the magazine as co-editor alongside the publishing director Arno Kleibel as well as editor-in-chief and redesigned the editorial line. Among other things, he introduced the new category “ Kulturbriefe” , which brings essayistic and feuilletonistic texts with cultural and cultural-historical content. The information about the literature of Central Europe and the international literary events were given greater weight, and it was possible to interest a younger generation of authors in the collaboration.

The 40-year anniversary number provides an overview of the texts published in the first twenty-five years, including by Ilse Aichinger , Ingeborg Bachmann , Italo Calvino , Elias Canetti , Paul Celan , Erich Fried , Alfred Gesswein , Peter Henisch , Friederike Mayröcker , Robert Menasse , Peter Rosei , Peter Turrini , Czeslaw Milosz .

Dossiers

Most issues of literature and criticism contain dossiers on specific topics or the literature of a selected country. The country dossiers include Moldova , Sorbian literature , Portugal , Ukraine , Guatemala , South Tyrol , Occitan literature , Sinti and Roma , Bulgaria , and Yiddish literature.

Culture letters

The cultural letters section was introduced by Karl-Markus Gauß . It contains essayistic and columnar texts with cultural and cultural-historical content. Each year of literature and criticism brings two to three dozen such cultural letters. Authors such as Beppo Beyerl , Max Blaeulich , Manfred Chobot , Klaus Ebner , Leopold Federmair , Janko Ferk , Andrea Grill , Regina Hilber , Ralf Höller , Drago Jančar , Michael Scharang , Wolfgang Sréter , Daniela Strigl , Christian Teissl , Manfred Wieninger already have cultural essays in published in the rubric.

Poetry

Since 2005, the first double issue of each year has been producing the first prints of Lyrik . According to the editorial team, an attempt is made to show the different forms of contemporary poetry.

Journal within the journal

The concept of a magazine within a magazine is international and enables a literary magazine to present selected texts in translation in a literary magazine from another country. In this way, literary texts are not described, but can be spoken directly. The idea came from a group of authors working with the Apokalipsa magazine in Ljubljana . The first projects brought together literature and criticism with sister magazines in Slovenia , Hungary , Montenegro , Poland and Croatia .

Reviews

Reviews of new books are published in each issue . A special feature of the literary magazine is the controversy , in which two differently evaluating reviews are printed on the same book publication. Well-known German scholars and authors such as Waltraud Anna Mitgutsch , Wendelin Schmidt-Dengler , Harald Klauhs, Daniela Strigl and Klaus Zeyringer have already written reviews for literature and criticism .
