Manfred Chobot (2008)

Manfred Chobot (born May 3, 1947 in Vienna ) is an Austrian writer and member of the Graz Authors' Assembly . In his books he mainly deals with topics of peripheral cultural perception. His texts can be read like annual rings on current affairs. The preoccupation with dialect literature , biographical fictions, everyday literature and essayism in marginal areas mark important positions in contemporary Austrian literature since 1970.

Life

Manfred Chobot (pronunciation like Kobot) was a successful competitive swimmer in his youth. a. State youth champion over 200 m dolphin (1965). His sporting experiences were included in the volume of poems Sportgedichte (1989).

Shortly before graduation, he broke off his studies in cultural engineering and water management, as he had meanwhile become a freelancer for the ORF (including music box, feature editing, radio protocol, ex libris, the Donauwelle). From 1971 to 1975 member of the working group of Austrian literary producers and first book publication in the edition literary producers in the publishing house Jugend & Volk (with Marie-Thérèse Kerschbaumer and Thomas Losch ). Acquaintance with Elfriede Jelinek , Ernst Jandl , Friederike Mayröcker , Michael Scharang , Heidi Pataki , Elfriede Gerstl , Peter Henisch , Gustav Ernst , Friedrich Hahn , Reinhard Wegerth , Thomas Northoff , Reinhard Priessnitz , Wilhelm Pevny u. a. Founding of the literary magazine astma , which was closed after six issues due to problems with the authorities (fine because astma was not a registered association; charges for alleged pornography of a poem).

Founded Galerie Yppen with Dagmar Chobot in 1971, later renamed Galerie Chobot and moved to Domgasse in 1984.

Editor of the magazine of the Theater der Jugend, “neue wege”, from autumn 1977 to May 1982, for which he also wrote reviews of records. Manfred Chobot took over the Lyrik aus Österreich series from Alois Vogel in 1991 at Verlag Grasl, Baden near Vienna; he was the editor of volumes 51 to 100 until the publisher closed the series in 2004. Several photo exhibitions of my own picture poems. Long-term work as a book reviewer for the magazine Buchkultur . In 1982 he got involved in the “Artists for Peace” initiative. With Rolf Schwendter and others in 1990 co-founders of the “First Vienna Reading Theater and Second Impromptu Theater”. From 1984 to 2005 publisher of the annual leaflet for the "Tag der Lyrik", which was initiated by the Podium literary group and distributed free of charge in large numbers or sent to schools. From January 1994 to April 2005 chairman of the literature group “Podium”.

Between 1995 and 2002 he stayed regularly in Hawaii (Maui). This resulted in two books Maui Catches the Sun - Myths from Hawaii (2001) and Aloha - Letters from Hawaii (2008).

Manfred Chobot is a member of the Graz authors' assembly , the cog and the Podium literature association .

He has been married to the gallery owner Dagmar Chobot since 1968 .
