The Hermannstädter Zeitung is a German-language weekly newspaper that appears on Fridays in Hermannstadt (Sibiu) in Transylvania , Romania . The editors see their newspaper as a news paper and forum for readers.

history

The newspaper was founded in 1968 under its current name. In 1971, when it was largely forbidden to use the German names of cities and places under the rule of Nicolae Ceaușescu , the paper was renamed Die Woche . Until the Romanian Revolution in 1989 , the newspaper was "aligned" within the Romanian Communist Party and did not oppose the authoritarian state. On December 26, 1989, it was given its original name again.

Todays situation

Today the newspaper is not only read by the Germans from Sibiu, but also more and more by foreigners interested in Romania, as the Hermannstädter Zeitung and the daily newspaper Allgemeine Deutsche Zeitung für Romania are mostly the only media that come directly from the country inform the situation of Germans in Romania. Today about 41 percent of the circulation goes abroad, with the circulation increasing from 1700 (1995) to about 2100 copies per issue.

The content of the newspaper is not only aimed at adults, but also at children, for whom the “junior corner” is set up. It is aimed at 9 to 14 year olds and thus promotes their knowledge of German. HaZett , which was aimed at 15 to 18 year olds, was also published as a supplement . This had to be stopped after initially strong, but later declining interest of the readership and the youth editorial team.
