Life

Nägler's Alsatian ancestors arrived in Transylvania in 1756. Thomas Nägler was the oldest of three children in a farming family. He first attended elementary school in his home village Slimnic and later the pedagogical lyceum and the Brukenthal lyceum in Sibiu , which he graduated in 1957. From 1957 to 1962 he studied history and philosophy at the University of Cluj . The title of his thesis was Relaţiile franco-germane între anii 1871–1890 and dealt with Franco-German relations between 1871 and 1890.

After completing his studies, he returned to Sibiu in 1962. There he was not allowed to take up a post at the State Archives and instead became a curator at the local Brukenthal Museum , where he was able to continue his research on the history of Transylvania in the Middle Ages and in modern times. From 1963 on, Nägler made numerous trips to the south of Transylvania to lead archaeological excavations in fortified churches , cemeteries and settlements. After winning a competition, he moved to the Research Institute of the Romanian Academy in Sibiu as a research assistant in 1969. In 1970 he also took on a teaching position at the University of Sibiu. In 1974, Nägler received his doctorate from the Faculty of History in Cluj with the dissertation Aşezarea saşilor în Transilvania , which he published in 1979 in German and 1981 in Romanian.

After the Romanian Revolution of 1989 , Thomas Nägler became the first director of the Institutul de Cercetări Socio-Umane Sibiu and held this position until he retired in 1994. He also went into politics in 1990 and was chairman of the Democratic Forum of Germans in Romania , until he was replaced by Paul Philippi in 1992 . From 1990 to 1994, Nägler was the main editor of the journal “Research on Folklore and Regional Studies”.

After a break of several years, in 1992 he again took over a professorship for the history of the Byzantine Empire and the Middle Ages at the Lucian Blaga University in Sibiu and held lectures in this area until 2010. From 1994, Nägler also supervised doctoral students at the history faculty. On October 19, 2006, the Lucian Blaga University awarded him an honorary doctorate . Thomas Nägler died of a heart attack on November 4, 2011, leaving behind his wife and a daughter.
