Life
Francisc Munteanu was the son of Iulia Munteanu, née Gomboş, and Francisc Munteanu. After graduating from school, he worked as an apprentice mechanic, in a chocolate factory and as a sailor on the Danube . During the Second World War , he was a German prisoner of war from February to May 1945. On his return he became editor-in-chief of Orizonturi noi magazine and worked in a weaving mill. From 1947 to 1949 he was an editor at the Patriotul and from 1949 he worked for two years as inspector general for theater at the Ministry of Information. After a short stop as an unskilled worker at the Bucharest Obor market, he was employed as a film director at the Buftea film studios from 1954 .
Together with Titus Popovici , Munteanu published his first book in 1951, Mecanicul şi alţi oameni de azi . In the following years up to three books were published by him per year. Above all, he described people in an industrial environment and workers in a society who are going through a socialist process. Critics accused him of portraying with ease and superficiality the unwillingness of many farmers to oppose such transformation processes.

He made his debut as a screenwriter in 1959 with Die Donau brennt , made his debut as a film director in 1960 with soldiers in uniform and as an auteur filmmaker he made his debut in 1962 with The Sky Is Without Bars .
