Radu Bălan

Radu Bălan (born May 24, 1936 in Căzăneşti , Ialomița County , Romania ; † February 14, 1995 in Timişoara ) was a Romanian politician and mayor of the city of Timişoara.

Life

Bălan graduated from the Technical Mining School in Lupeni . From 1954 to 1960 he worked as a foreman in the coal mines in the Schiltal and later in Caransebeş . In the period from 1963 to 1972 he was General Secretary of the youth organization of the Romanian Communist Party (UTC) in the Banat and Timiș County .

Bălan studied economics in Bucharest and was mayor of Timișoara from 1978 to 1981. From 1981 to 1987 he was General Secretary of the Romanian Communist Party of the Hunedoara District Committee . Shortly before the Romanian Revolution of 1989 , he was elected General Secretary of the Romanian Communist Party of the Timiș County Committee.

On December 22nd, 1989, the crowd gathered on Opera Square and the local press celebrated Bălan as the leader of the revolution. After the political turning point, however, he was made responsible for the bloody suppression of the revolution in Timișoara. Bălan was sentenced to 23 years in prison. He died of cancer on February 14, 1995 and was buried on February 16 in the cemetery on Lipovaer Strasse.
