Nicolae-Ionel Ciucă (born February 7, 1967 in Pleniţa ) is a Romanian general a. D. and politicians. On November 4, 2019, he became Minister of Defense in the Ludovic Orban I cabinet . He was previously the military commander of the Armata Română , the armed forces of his home country, since January 2015 .

Life

Nicolae Ciucă was born in 1967 in Pleniţa ( Dolj County ), in the south-west of Romania. After finishing school at a military high school in Craiova , he attended the Nicolae Bălcescu Military Academy in Sibiu until 1988 .

Military career

From 2002 to 2003 he was the commander of the Romanian battalion in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan and in 2004 he commanded the Romanian troops in Iraq. In the meantime, he had obtained a doctorate from the Romanian Military Academy in 2003. The foreign deployment was followed by a deployment in the 2nd Brigade from 2004 to 2007 (initially as chief of operations, later as commander of the staff). He then served from 2007 to 2011 in the 282nd Mechanized Infantry Brigade (from 2009 as a commander, before that as its deputy).

From 2011 to 2014 he was in command of the 2nd Infantry Division. He completed the next uses in quick succession. From January to October 2014 he served as the commander of the Romanian army . From October 2014 to January 2015 he was Deputy Commander of the Romanian Armed Forces, and he was appointed Commander on January 15, 2015. After his appointment to the government, his previous deputy, Daniel Petrescu , became the new chief of staff.

Private

The minister is married and has one son. In addition to his mother tongue, he also speaks English.
