Mette Frederiksen
Mette Frederiksen (born November 19, 1977 in Aalborg ) is a Danish politician . She has been chairwoman of the Social Democrats since June 28, 2015 and Prime Minister of Denmark since June 27, 2019 .
Life and work
Frederiksen grew up in her hometown Aalborg and comes from a "parental home that was anchored in the third generation of the labor movement "; her father was a typographer , her mother a teacher . After visiting the Byplanvejen Skole and the High School on Aalborghus high school , she began a study of administrative and social sciences at Aalborg Universitetscenter . While still a student, she applied for a parliamentary candidacy in the Ballerup constituency in 2000 , but was unsuccessful. Between 2000 and 2001 she was a youth advisor at Landsorganisation i Danmark (LO), the trade union umbrella organization .
Political career
In the 2001 Folketing election she was elected to the Folketing in the constituency of Københavns Amtskreds . In 2002 she was awarded the Nina Bang Prize. During her membership in parliament, she was spokeswoman for her party for culture, media and gender equality from 2001 to 2005, and in 2005 for social affairs and a member of the social committee. In 2005, Mette Frederiksen also became vice- chairman of the Social Democrats in the Folketing. At the same time, she completed her studies at Aalborg University in 2007 with a bachelor's degree .
Since the 2007 folk election she has been running in the constituency of Københavns Omegns Storkreds . In addition, she completed a postgraduate course in African Studies at the University of Copenhagen , which she completed in 2009 with a master's degree . She came under media criticism in May 2010 when it became known that she had enrolled her daughter in a private school rather than a public school. Previously, she had sharply criticized better-off parents in the past when they sent their children to private schools.
On October 3, 2011, she became Minister of Labor in the Thorning-Schmidt I government . She also held this office in the subsequent Thorning-Schmidt II government until she took over the justice department on October 10, 2014 . After the resignation of Helle Thorning-Schmidt as a result of the election defeat in the Folketing elections in 2015 , the party executive nominated Mette Frederiksen for the party chairmanship on June 20, 2015. Her election took place on June 28, 2015 at an extraordinary party congress. Under Frederiksen's leadership, a rapprochement between the Social Democrats and the right-wing populist Danish People's Party can be seen.
In the general election in 2019 her party got the most votes. Since June 27, 2019 Frederiksen manages the Socialdemokraterne the minority government and the other parties to the red block Frederiksen .
With her reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic in Denmark , she occasionally achieved approval ratings of over 80% in the population.
