Kersti Kaljulaid (born December 30, 1969 in Tartu , then Estonian SSR , Soviet Union ) is an Estonian economist and politician . She has been President of the Republic of Estonia since October 10, 2016 .

Life

Early years

Kersti Kaljulaid graduated from high school in the Tallinn district of Mustamäe in 1987 . From 1987 to 1992 she studied biology with a focus on genetics at the University of Tartu and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree . She then studied economics in Tartu and obtained a Master of Business Administration in 2001 . From 2012 to 2016 she was Chair of the University Council of her alma mater .

economy

From 1994 to 1997 Kaljulaid worked for the telecommunications company Eesti Telefon . In 1997/98 she was employed by the Estonian bank Hoiupank , and in 1998/99 as a project manager at the successor company, Hansapank .

In 1999 she became economic policy advisor to the then Estonian Prime Minister Mart Laar . In February 2002 she switched to the Eesti Energia energy group as a department head . In the same year she became the director of the Eesti Energia power station of Iru . During this time she hosted a popular political program on the Estonian Kuku Raadio . From 2001 to 2004 Kaljulaid represented the Estonian government on the board of the Estonian Genome Foundation (Eesti Geenivaramu).

European Court of Auditors

After Estonia joined the European Union, Kersti Kaljulaid was appointed Estonian representative at the European Court of Auditors based in Luxembourg in May 2004 . She worked there until she was elected President in October 2016.

In 2009 Kaljulaid was voted “European of the Year” in Estonia.

On October 3, 2016 , the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ) elected Kersti Kaljulaid in the sixth ballot to succeed Toomas Hendrik Ilves as the new President. Previously, neither in the first three ballots in parliament nor in the two ballots in the electoral assembly (Valimiskogu) could a candidate prevail. Kaljulaid was then nominated as a compromise candidate without opponents for the sixth ballot.

Kersti Kaljulaid took up her new position on October 10, 2016. She is the fourth Estonian head of state since regaining independence in 1991 and the first woman in this office since the state was founded in 1918.

Private

Kersti Kaljulaid is married for the second time and has a daughter and three sons. Her half-brother Raimond Kaljulaid was head of the Põhja-Tallinn district of the Estonian capital and is currently a member of the Estonian parliament.

In addition to Estonian, she also speaks Russian, English, French and Finnish.
