Mustamäe is a district of the Estonian capital Tallinn .

etymology

The name Mustamäe goes back to the Mustamägi (German about Schwarzberg ), a flat hill on the border with the Nõmme district, and the historical estate surrounding it (whose German name was Hohenhaupt ).

Location and population

Mustamäe is located about 5 km southwest of Tallinn city center and borders the districts of Haabersti , Nõmme and Kristiine . With 8.15 km² Mustamäe is the second smallest of the eight districts of Tallinn.

Mustamäe has 62,255 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2011) and is divided into four districts ( Estonian asumid ): Kadaka , Municipality , Siili and Sääse .

The population is very mixed in terms of ethnicity and mother tongue, which was also evident in the last census (58.5% Estonian, 39.1% Russian).

Until 1961, the territory of today's district belonged to the " Kesklinn Rajon " created in 1945 . This was expanded to include a few districts in the 1960s and was called "Rajon Mitte" for a short time. After the completion of today's prefabricated housing estates and a further expansion, which extended the new Rajon to the old town , the Rajon got the name "Oktoberrajon" in mid-1973, which it kept until 1991. After the system change , the “Oktoberrajon” became “Westrajon”, from which Mustamäe and parts of Kristiine , Nõmme , Kesklinn and Põhja-Tallinn emerged in 1993 .

Development

Mustamäe consists mainly of five to nine storey high Soviet- style prefabricated buildings that were built between 1960 and 1973. A trolleybus system connects Mustamäe with the districts of Kesklinn , Põhja-Tallinn , Kristiine and Haabersti .

Mustamäe is home to the Tallinn University of Technology , the headquarters of the energy company Eesti Energia , the Mustamäe regional hospital, the Tallinn Children's Hospital and the Tallinn German Gymnasium ( Tallinna Saksa Gümnaasium ).

Originally conceived as a pure dormitory city , Mustamäe has steadily gained in importance since 1991. Today you can find many service companies (including Skype ) and industry (food production, textiles, building materials, energy production) here.
