Paljassaare is a municipality ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn .

location

The district is located in the Põhja-Tallinn district ("North Tallinn"), about six kilometers from Tallinn city center. Paljassaare has 594 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010).

Paljassaare (literally "bare island") is located on the peninsula of the same name ( Paljassaare poolsaar ). The two headlands of the peninsula are called Suur-Paljassaare poolsaar (with the headland Kõrgemäe ots ) and Väike-Paljassaare poolsaar . The small bay Saartevahe haak (in German "hook between the islands") lies between the two headlands .

In the west lies the Bay of Paljassaare ( Paljassaare laht ), in the east the Bay of Tallinn ( Tallinna laht ).

The headland Paljassaare emerged late from two larger islands. On Ludwig August Mellin's map from the end of the 18th century, the two islands of Suur-Karli ("Gross-Karl") and the (significantly larger) Väike-Karli ("Little Karl") with their border guards' house were separate islands recorded. They were later connected to the mainland by the sinking of the sea level in the Baltic Sea . It was not until the 19th century that the area with its large sandy areas became a peninsula within the city of Tallinn.

For decades, large parts of the peninsula were a restricted military area. Construction of a Russian sea fortress began as early as 1912. A small railroad led to the quay of the naval fortress war port. During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, a small residential area was built on Paljassaare. A fishing port ( Paljassaare sadam ) and the central pumping station of the city of Tallinn were also built there.

Paljassaare is now partially used as an industrial and port area and is a nature reserve in the north.

The 43.6 hectare port of Paljassaare is only served by cargo ships. It has a turnover volume of up to 3 million tons per year. One of the largest fish processing factories in Estonia is also located in Paljassaare. A large, modern sewage treatment plant in the city of Tallinn is located in Paljassaare.

The northern and western parts of the peninsula, in which large areas are under water all year round, and the small islets off the beaches of Paljassaares form a natural habitat for birds with over two hundred ornithological species. The area is designated as a bird sanctuary under the Natura 2000 program .
