Kelmiküla (in German " Schelmendorf ") is a district ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is located in the Põhja-Tallinn district ("North Tallinn").

Description and history

The city district has 911 inhabitants (as of 2008).

Historic two to three-story wooden houses with a central stone staircase alternate with modern new buildings that were built after Estonian independence was regained.

In Kelmiküla is, among other things, the Tallinn Central Station, the " Baltic Railway Station " ( Balti jaam ). The original station building was erected at this point in 1870. After it was demolished, the waiting hall was completed in 1962 after a two-year construction period and in 1970 the main building of today's station with its clear geometric shapes was completed by Leningrad architects.

The train station is on Toompuiestee Street. Its historical German name is Dompromenade . The street was renamed Juri-Gagarin -Allee ( Juri Gagarini puiestee ) in 1961. Today it bears its former name again.
