The Torupilli (red) district in the Kesklinn (yellow) district of Tallinn

Torupilli (in German " bagpipe ") is a district ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is located in the Kesklinn district ("inner city").

Description and history

Torupilli has 3,207 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010).

The curious name of the district comes from a historic tavern with a bagpiper depicted on its sign. The inn has been documented since 1803.

Torupilli is one of the younger suburbs of the Estonian capital. Most of the areas away from the highways leading out of the city were not built on until the end of the 18th century and the beginning of the 19th century. The occasion was the order of the Russian Tsar Peter the First to develop Tallinn into a naval base after the conquest of Sweden . In Torupilli, numerous officers bought cheap land.

The population growth of Tallinn on the threshold from the 19th to the 20th century also caused the population of Torupilli to skyrocket. Residential houses with beautiful Art Nouveau facades were built on Laulupeo Street in particular . In the interwar period, the typical Tallinn wooden buildings with a central stone staircase were added to the houses from the Tsarist era . Later four to five-story houses were built as workers' apartments.

With the industrialization of Tallinn, some companies also settled in Torupilli. For example, the Tallinn cellulose factory and the spirits manufacturer Liviko were based there.
