Augusts Kirhenšteins
August Kirhenšteins (born September 6 . Jul / 18th September 1872 . Greg community Mazsalaca , Governorate of Livonia ; † 3. November 1963 in Riga , then Latvian SSR , Soviet Union ) was a Latvian microbiologist and politicians . He was Latvian Prime Minister for a short time in 1940 and took Latvia into the Soviet Union.
Life
Kirhenšteins graduated from the Veterinary Institute in Tartu in 1901 . From 1902 to 1905 he worked as a veterinarian in Limbaži and Valmiera . He was involved in the revolution of 1905 and therefore fled abroad. After stays in Switzerland and Serbia , he returned to his homeland after the February Revolution in 1917 . During the Latvian independence he held high posts at the University of Latvia . He was one of the leading scientists in the field of microbiology and was a co-founder of the Latvian Academy of Sciences .
In 1940, after the Red Army marched into Latvia, Kārlis Ulmanis appointed him as his successor as Prime Minister on June 20. On July 21, Ulmanis was forced to resign as president . His duties were taken over temporarily by Kirhenšteins. On August 25, Kirhenšteins applied for Latvia to join the Soviet Union. After that he was until 1952 Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Latvian SSR and Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR.
The microbiological institute of the Latvian Academy of Sciences in Riga was named after Kirhenšteins for a long time.
