Guntis Ulmanis (born September 13, 1939 in Riga ) is a Latvian politician. From 1993 to 1999 he was President of the Republic of Latvia .

Life

Ulmanis was born on September 13, 1939 in Riga. His grandfather was the brother of the then Latvian President Kārlis Ulmanis . Ulmanis spent his childhood in Siberia , where his parents lived in exile . In 1948 he returned to Riga. From 1963 to 1965 he served in the Soviet Army. In 1966 he graduated from the Latvian University and entered the CPSU . He first worked on the Executive Committee of the Riga City Soviet and later was director of a service combine.

In 1989 he left the party. In 1993 he was elected as a member of the Latvian Farmers' Union in the Saeima and in the same year as the first President of the Republic of Latvia since regaining independence. In 1996 he started his second term, which ended on July 7, 1999.

Under Ulmanis, the death penalty was abolished in Latvia, the Russian armed forces left the country and the Soviet radar system in Skrunda was dismantled.

In October 2002 Ulmanis became chairman of the organizing committee of the Ice Hockey World Championship 2006 in Riga. In 2010 he returned to politics as chairman of the Par Labu Latviju party association and was a member of parliament for one year.

Ulmanis was born with the economist Aina Ulmane. Štelce married. With her he has a daughter and a son.
