Diena (German: The Day) is one of the daily newspapers with the highest circulation in Latvia . The paper has been published since November 23, 1990. The editor-in-chief from 1992 to 2008 was Sarmīte Ēlerte (from November 3, 2010 to October 25, 2011 Minister of Culture in the Dombrovskis II cabinet ). Up until 1999 there was a Russian version in addition to the Latvian edition, which had to be discontinued due to a lack of demand.

In 2002 the newspaper was fined for criticizing Laimonis Strujēvičs, then Minister for Economic Affairs, in several articles in 1998 . The fine was ruled unlawful by the European Court of Justice in 2007 .

The number of subscriptions fell from 41,471 in 2000 to 30,774 in January 2009. The Latvian businessman Viesturs Koziols bought 51% of the shares in 2010; most of the editors then left the company and founded the independent weekly magazine ir . In 2013 the number of Diena subscriptions was around 20,000.
