description

The municipality of Nõmme (historical German name Nömme ) has 6,048 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010). Its area is 4.6 square kilometers.

The mention of a jug in the area of today's city district comes from the end of the 18th century on Ludwig August Mellin's map .

In 1872 Nõmme received the title of summer resort . At the same time, the Nõmme station on the rail link between the Baltic Sea town of Haapsalu and Tallinn was put into operation. At that time the first permanent houses were built in the wooded area.

In 1908 Nõmme was officially granted market rights. This made it an active transshipment point for the goods of the local rural population. The historic market hall was inaugurated in 1930. In 1926 Nõmme received city rights. In 1940 Nõmme was incorporated into the city of Tallinn.

The Evangelical Lutheran Church of Nõmme goes back to a gift from the German Baltic noble family von Glehn, who made the site available in 1913. The Church of Peace ( Rahu kirik ) has been named after the Peace Treaty of Tartu between Estonia and Soviet Russia since 1924 . In 1925 the pastorate was completed.

In 1924 the Soleil cinema opened in Nõmme . The building has been used as a cultural center since 1946. The Nõmme Jazz Festival takes place there.
