Gertrud Westermann (born April 17, 1908 in Kazan ( Russian Empire ), † August 2, 1995 in Barsinghausen ) was a German university advisor and historian. She did research on topics of Baltic studies .

Life

Westermann studied from 1931 to 1939 in Tartu (estn. Tartu in Estonia ) at the local university history, archeology and German studies, graduating with a Mag. Phil. In 1940 she was awarded a doctorate in philosophy for her master's thesis . From 1939 to 1945 she was employed as a teacher in Dorpat and in Rawitsch in what was then Warthegau . From 1955 to 1975 she worked at a school in Uetze near Hanover, most recently as a senior teacher . Since 1980 she has been a full member of the Baltic Historical Commission . After many decades of unsuccessful research on a historical local dictionary for the Baltic states, Gertrud Westermann developed the 1985 part for Estonia including Livonia in just five years. The second volume for southern Livland and Courland was published in 1990 under the direction of Hans Feldmann . The two volumes have become fundamental works that are regularly used as indispensable in academic libraries. The editor of the volumes was Heinz von zur Mühlen , who also wrote the foreword.
