description

The city district has 3,401 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010).

The name Tondi comes from the Tallinn councilor Jobst Dunte. He had a summer cottage built in the area at the end of the 18th century. The building was demolished in the 1970s, but part of the historic park has been preserved.

Immediately before the beginning of World War I , the tsarist army built barracks and gun emplacements in Tondi between 1908 and 1910 . From April 1919 the military school of the young Estonian armed forces was housed there.

Industry settled in the second half of the 1930s and was further expanded during the Soviet occupation of Estonia in the 1950s and 60s. Today, in addition to residential buildings, Tondi is mainly home to office complexes, administration buildings and educational institutions.

Tondi has a train station, which is served by the Estonian railway company Elektriraudtee . It opened in 1933.
