Vana Mustamäe
Vana-Mustamäe (in German "Alt-Schwarzberg") is a district ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is located in the Nõmme district .
Description and history
Vana-Mustamäe has 2,091 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010). Its area is 1.75 square kilometers.
The area was first mentioned in 1371 under the name Hohenhaupt .
Only when the area was acquired by the Baltic German nobleman Nikolai von Glehn (1841–1923) at the end of the 19th century did systematic development emerge. In 1886 von Glehn's eccentric "castle" with the spacious park and other extravagant buildings such as the Palm House (1898/1900), an observation tower (1910) and a miniature castle for von Glehn's grandchildren was completed. When Glehn's wife Caroline died in 1896, the nobleman had a burial place built with ponds and bridges. Other members of the von Glehn family were later buried there.
After the Estonian declaration of independence at the end of World War I , the von Glehn family left Estonia in 1923. In 1934 the then independent town of Nõmme became the owner of the large estate.
Especially in the interwar period , Vana-Mustamäe became a popular area for building new homes. In 1936 a popular café with outdoor pools and later a sports center in Vana-Mustamäe were built.
Like all of Nõmme, Vana-Mustamäe was incorporated into the Estonian capital Tallinn in 1940.
