Maakri is a district ( Estonian asum ) of the Estonian capital Tallinn . It is located in the Kesklinn district ("inner city").

description

Maakri has 915 inhabitants (as of May 1, 2010).

After Estonian independence was regained, Maakri became the economic and financial center of the Estonian capital in the early 1990s with the construction of numerous modern high-rise buildings.

St. Johann hospital church

The historic St. John's Hospital Church (Estonian Jaani Seegi kirik ) is also located in the district . The Tallinn Leper Hospital ( Latin domus fratrum leprosorum sancti Johannis , Low German Sankt Johannis sekenhus ) was mentioned as early as 1237 in a document by Wilhelm von Modenas . The associated chapel was built in the 14th century at the latest .

In 1559 the church and the charity were destroyed during the Livonian War , but the hospital and church were rebuilt in 1648. In 1724 the church was enlarged and in 1781 the bell tower above the gable of the west wall was renovated. The two bells date from 1619 and 1731.

The ground plan of the church is trapezoidal. In contrast to most Christian churches, the house of God is not oriented from west to east, but from south-east (entrance) to north-west (altar). The exterior and interior of the church are modest.

The church has been part of the Tallinn Parish of the Armenian Apostolic Church since the early 1990s .
