Mart Helme (born October 31, 1949 in Pärnu ) is an Estonian historian, diplomat and politician. He was long-time chairman of the Eesti Konservatiivne Rahvaerakond and has been Estonia's interior minister since April 2019.

Life

Mart Helme graduated from school in Pärnu in 1968. He then studied history at Tartu State University . He completed his university studies in 1973. Until 1992, Helme was the managing director of the Estonian Publishers' Association ( Eesti kirjastajate liit ).

politics

In 1994, Helme joined the diplomatic service of the Republic of Estonia, which had regained its independence . In 1995 the Estonian President Lennart Meri appointed the outspoken Kremlin critic as the Estonian ambassador to Moscow . After his return to Estonia, Helme was Deputy State Secretary in the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1999.

In 2003/2004, Helme worked as a consultant in the Estonian Ministry of Agriculture. From 2005 to 2009 he was an advisor to the Estonian deputy Tunne Kelam from the conservative-nationalist Fatherland Union ( Isamaaliit ). Helme has been head of the Estonian publishing house Kunst since 2009 .

In 2004 he ran unsuccessfully in the European elections in Estonia as a candidate for the rural-conservative Estonian People's Union ( Eestimaa Rahvaliit ). In September 2004, Helme was expelled from the party after a dispute with the then Interior Minister Margus Leivo . Leivo had ordered the removal of a newly erected monument in Lihula for Estonians fighting on the side of the German Empire .

In the 2011 elections to the Estonian Parliament , Helme ran as a single candidate with no chance. It received 2,467 votes.

In 2012, Helme founded the right-wing populist Eesti Konservatiivne Rahvaerakond (Estonian Conservative People's Party - EKRE). She made it straight to the Riigikogu in the 2015 general election . Helme was chairman of the party at that time, his son Martin Helme his deputy.

After the parliamentary election in 2019 , which was successful for the EKRE , he became Minister of the Interior in the Ratas II cabinet in April 2019 .

Private

Mart Helme was married to the Estonian art historian Sirje Helme (* 1949). The couple has three children, including the Estonian politician and EU opponent Martin Helme (* 1976). Mart Helme is currently married to Helle-Monika Helme. He has two children with her.

Mart Helme is the brother of the Estonian military historian Rein Helme (1954–2003) and the uncle of the writer Peeter Helme (* 1978).

During the Soviet occupation of Estonia, Helme also appeared as a singer and bass guitarist in the successful bands Fix, Hallo, Vitamiin and Hübriid .
