European elections in Estonia 2004
The 2004 European elections in Estonia took place on June 13, 2004. It was the first direct election to the European Parliament after Estonia joined the European Union on May 1, 2004. Estonia has six members of the European Parliament .
Turnout and voting system
In Estonia's elections to the 6th European Parliament, 26.8% of the 873,809 eligible voters took part, one of the lowest voter turnouts in the European Union . The whole country formed one constituency. The Estonian MPs are elected according to the principle of proportional representation. There is (logically) no threshold clause in the European elections in Estonia . The D'Hondt procedure was used to determine the number of representatives . In contrast to the European elections in Estonia in 2009, the system of open lists applied , which means that the order of the candidates on the party lists could be influenced by the voters.

A total of ten parties and four individual candidates stand for election. The biggest winner was the Estonian Social Democratic Party ( Sotsiaaldemokraatlik Erakond Eestis ), which with three seats was able to represent half of all Estonian MEPs.
The remaining three seats in parliament were shared by the Center Party ( Eesti Keskerakond ), the liberal Reform Party ( Eesti Reformierakond ) and the Conservative Fatherland Union ( Isamaaliit ).
The four individual candidates Georgi Bõstrov , Martin Helme , Marek Strandberg and Heikki Heinrich Tann received a total of 13,162 votes (5.7%).

The following were elected as Estonian MEPs in the European Parliament:

- Ivari Padar (SDE)
- Toomas Savi (Reform Party)
- Tunne-Väldo Kelam (Fatherland Union)
Ivari Padar (SDE) renounced his seat, so that Andres Tarand (SDE) became a member of the European Parliament as a successor. Toomas Hendrik Ilves was elected President of Estonia on September 23, 2006 and left the European Parliament. Katrin Saks (SDE) replaced him in October 2006 .
The subsequent European elections for the 7th electoral term of the European Parliament took place in Estonia on June 7, 2009.
