Toomas Savi (born December 30, 1942 in Tartu , Estonian SSR ) is an Estonian politician . From 2004 to 2009 he was a member of the 6th European Parliament .

education

Toomas Savi graduated from the University of Tartu with a degree in medicine in 1970 . In 1975 he passed a second exam in sports psychology . From 1970 to 1980 Savi worked as a doctor, and until 1979 as a senior research assistant. From 1979 to 1993 he was the head of the Sports Polyclinic in Tartu. He was also employed at Finnish hospitals in Kuopio and Kajaani .

Politician

Shortly before Estonian regained independence, Savi entered politics. From 1989 to 1993, 1996/97 and 1999/2000 he was a member of the Tartu City Council. From 1993 to 1995 he was Deputy Mayor of Tartu.

Savi has been a member of the liberal Estonian Reform Party (Reformierakond) since 1994 . In 1995 Toomas Savi was elected as a member of the Estonian Parliament ( Riigikogu ). From 1995 to 2003 he was President of Parliament and 2003/2004 Deputy Speaker of Parliament. In spring 2004 Savi was elected as an Estonian member of the European Parliament, where he was the only representative of his party. During his tenure there, he was a member of the Development Committee and Vice-Chair of the Delegation for Relations with Canada .

Sports

Toomas Savi co-founded the Estonian Olympic Committee in 1989 and has been chairman of the Estonian Ski Association since 1999.

Private life

Toomas Savi is married to Kirsti Savi.
