Ula Stoeckl

Ula Stöckl (born February 5, 1938 in Ulm ) is a German filmmaker , director , author and actress .

Life

The daughter of the clarinetist Alfons Stöckl and his wife Katharina geb. After completing secondary school in 1954, Kreis received training as a secretary. In February 1958, she began studying languages ​​in Paris and London. From 1961 she was foreign language and management secretary in Paris and Stuttgart. From May to August 1963 she worked as an editorial assistant at DM Verlag in Sandweier near Baden-Baden.

In 1963 she began her studies at the Institute for Film Design in Ulm, which she graduated in 1968. Her graduation film, Nine Lives, the Cat was one of the first film productions to deal directly with life as a woman in German society.

Ula Stöckl founded her own production company in 1968, the 'Ula Stöckl Filmproduktion'. In 1969, together with Edgar Reitz , she realized the Tales of the Bucket Child , a film with 22 episodes from the life of a girl who does not fit into bourgeois society. The film is part of the New German Film .

Ula Stöckl then worked for television for several years. Conflict situations from the perspective of women and children were repeatedly her topic. In doing so, she avoided any one-sidedness and confronted her characters with seemingly hopeless problems, often based on dream motifs.

In 1984 she was able to direct a movie again with The Sleep of Reason . In 1992 she made one of the first feature films, Das alten Lied , to address German reunification and its problems.

Ula Stöckl also worked for the theater for a short time when she premiered the play Fräulein Julie on October 8, 1974 in Frankfurt in the Theater am Turm . She has taught at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin and in the USA at Hollins University in Roanoke (Virginia) as well as in directing and women in film at the University of Central Florida in Orlando (Florida) .

In a special way she took care of the first European women's film festival. Since it was founded in 1978, she has worked for the International Festival Films de Femmes in Paris for 15 years. She has worked for the Berlinale since 1982 in the areas of competition and panorama and moderated press conferences and discussions with the public. Since 2002 she has been working as a program adviser on the selection committee of the Venice International Film Festival .
