European elections in Portugal 2004
The 2004 European elections in Portugal took place on June 13, 2004. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 2004 , with 24 of the 732 seats in the European Parliament in Portugal . As part of the admission of ten new EU members on May 1, 2004, Portugal lost one seat in the European Parliament. The election took place according to proportional representation without a threshold clause, with the whole of Portugal being considered a single constituency .
In the 1999 European elections , the then 25 Portuguese seats were divided between four parties: Partido Socialista (PS, 12 seats), Partido Social Democrata (PSD, 9 seats), Centro Democrático e Social - Partido Popular (CDS-PP, 2 seats ) and Coligação Democrática Unitária (CDU, 2 seats). In the 2004 election, PSD and CDS-PP lost a significant number of votes and thus two seats, despite their joint list connection. For the first time, the Bloco de Esquerda moved into the European Parliament with a member. The turnout was 38.6 percent, well below the European average of 45.6 percent.
