Edite Fátima dos Santos Marreiros Estrela (born October 28, 1949 in Belver (Carrazeda de Ansiães) ) is a Portuguese politician . She is a member of the Partido Socialista (PS) and a member of the European Parliament . Her main focus is on women's rights.

Estrela completed her bachelor's degree in classical philology and her master's degree in media studies. From 1973 to 1986 she worked as a teacher for Portuguese literature, later she was the author of television and radio programs on the Portuguese language, which she also moderated herself. She was also a permanent contributor to various newspapers and news magazines, and from 1988 to 1994 she was Vice President of the Portuguese Writers' Union. It has received several national and international awards.

Estrela joined the PS in 1981, where she held numerous high positions. From 1994 to 2002 she held the office of mayor of Sintra , during which time she was also the deputy governor of the greater Lisbon area . From 1988 to 1994 and again from 2002 to 2004 she sat in the Assembleia da República . She has been a member of the European Parliament since 2004, and since then she has also been Vice-Chair of the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality. In 2013 she was responsible for motion for a resolution A7-0306 / 2013 .
