The 2004 European elections in Latvia took place on June 12, 2004. It took place at the same time as the EU- wide European elections in 2004 , with nine of the 736 seats in the European Parliament being awarded in Latvia . It was the first European elections in Latvia since joining the EU on May 1, 2004.

Electoral process

The election took place according to the proportional representation with preferential votes according to the D'Hondt procedure , whereby the whole country formed a single constituency . There was a threshold clause of 5 percent. Citizens aged 18 and over had the right to vote, and 21 and over to vote.

Results

The turnout was 40.9% and was thus below the European average of 45.6%.

The national conservative party Tēvzemei ​​un Brīvībai / LNNK was able to move into the European Parliament as the strongest party with around 29% of the votes cast and 4 MPs. The second largest party was the liberal-conservative Jaunais Laiks , which received two MPs. Par Cilvēka Tiesībām Vienotā Latvijā , Tautas partija and Latvijas Ceļš received one MP each .
