European elections in Belgium 2004
The 2004 European elections in Belgium took place on June 13, 2004. It was carried out in the course of the EU- wide European elections in 2004 , with 24 seats in the European Parliament in Belgium . Of these, 14 belonged to the Dutch-speaking electoral college, 9 to the French-speaking and 1 to the German-speaking electoral college.
Electoral system
Actively entitled to vote at any Belgians over the age of 18 years who has applied his residence in Belgium or postal voting for the Belgian electoral lists. Also, EU citizens are eligible to vote under the additional condition that they are registered on the electoral roll. Every EU citizen who is 21 years of age or older, who resides in an EU member state and who, depending on the electoral body, speaks Dutch, French or German, is eligible to vote.
Voting is compulsory in Belgium . Violations can be punished with a fine.
The election is a proportional representation , which means that each party receives seats based on its share of the valid votes cast nationwide. The electoral area is divided into four constituencies: Flemish Region , Wallonia Region , German-Speaking Region and Brussels-Capital Region .
