The European elections in Belgium in 1979 were the first direct election to the European Parliament in Belgium. It took place on June 10th as part of the EU- wide European elections in 1979 . In Belgium, 24 of the 410 MPs were awarded. The mandates were divided between a Dutch-speaking electoral college (13 seats) and a French-speaking electoral college (11 seats). There was compulsory voting.

The winners of the election were the Christian Democrats, who achieved a total of ten seats. The social democratic parties won seven seats, with the French-speaking PS becoming the strongest force in their electoral college.

Bottom line

The turnout was 91.4%. In the Dutch-speaking electoral college the turnout was 93%, in the French-speaking electoral college it was 89%.
