Starting position
The result of the 2011 general election
In the 2011 parliamentary elections, Saskaņas Centrs , which was mainly elected by the Russian-speaking population, became the strongest party for the first time. Of the so-called oligarchic parties, only the ZZS alliance overcame the 5% hurdle.
The formation of the government in 2011
After the election, a center-right coalition consisting of the ZRP , Vienotība and the National Alliance was formed . A few days after the coalition agreement was signed, six MPs resigned from the ZRP, whose support the three coalition parties then secured with individual agreements. On October 25, Dombrovski's III cabinet was confirmed with 57 votes.
Valdis Dombrovskis ran as the top candidate of Vienotība for the European elections in 2014 and resigned as prime minister in early 2014. He was later nominated as the Latvian EU Commissioner. On January 22, 2014, Laimdota Straujuma , also a politician of the Vienotība, succeeded Dombrovki's Prime Minister of Latvia. She was the first woman to head her country's government.
