Jānis Jurkāns

Jānis Jurkāns (born August 31, 1946 in Riga ) is a Latvian politician. He was the first foreign minister after Latvia gained independence in 1990.

Life

Jurkāns is of Polish descent. In 1974, he graduated in English language at the University of Latvia from. At the time of Latvia's secession from the Soviet Union, he took part in political events and was a member of the Popular Front. From 1990 to 1992 he was Foreign Minister in Godmani's cabinet. From 1994 to 2005 he was chairman of the Tautas Saskaņas partija and a member of the Saeima . After his party resigned from the Par Cilvēka Tiesībām Vienotā Latvijā alliance , Jurkāns announced his resignation.

In 2011 he ran again for the party Šlesera Reformu partija LPP / LC as potential foreign minister.
