Dace Melbārde (born April 3, 1971 in Riga ) is a Latvian politician of the Nacionālā apvienība (NA). From 2013 to June 2019 she was Minister of Culture in her country. She was elected to the European Parliament in the 2019 European elections.

Life

After graduating from school, Dace Melbārde studied history at the University of Latvia from 1990 . The bachelor’s degree in 1994 was followed by master’s degrees at the Latvian Academy of Culture (1996) and the University of Latvia (2001). In 2007 she received her doctorate from the Academy of Culture.

politics

In October 2013 Melbārde was appointed as a non-party candidate for the post of Latvian Minister of Culture in Dombrovski's III cabinet . She also took on this position in the following Straujuma I cabinet and joined NA in February 2014.

Melbārde has been a member of the Latvian parliament, the Saeima, since the parliamentary elections in October of the same year . In the Cabinet of Straujuma II and in the Cabinet of Kučinski she was again Minister of Culture of Latvia. As is usually the case in Latvia, her parliamentary mandate was suspended during this time.

In the 2018 election, your party suffered a loss of votes. Melbārde was able to defend her mandate and moved back into parliament. Under Prime Minister Krišjānis Kariņš (since 2019) she was again appointed Minister of Culture. After the European elections in Latvia in 2019 , in which she was the top candidate of her party, she moved to Brussels as a member of parliament.
