Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis (born December 27, 1977 in Rīga ) is a Latvian economist and politician of Russian origin. From 2013 to 2014 he was entrusted with the ministerial posts for education and science and economics.

Life

Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis was born in 1977 in what was then the Latvian SSR . Since his ancestors come from Russia, he was not granted Latvian naturalization until 1997 . He holds a BA in Economics and Finance from the University of Latvia and a PhD in Economics from Clark University .

Political career

Vjačeslavs Dombrovskis went into politics in 2011 when he joined the newly formed Zatler's Reform Party and was directly elected to the Latvian Parliament (Saeima). For the first two years he acted as parliamentary group leader. After the resignation of the previous incumbent Roberts Ķīlis , he was appointed Minister of Education and Science in May 2013 ( Dombrovskis III cabinet ). In the following Straujuma I cabinet , he took over the office of Minister of Economics. While he was working as minister, his mandate was suspended.

For the general election in 2014 , he entered as a number of prominent members of the Reform Party, on the list of Vienotība on. When he was not taken into account in the new cabinet, he left parliament in 2015 and devoted himself to setting up the CERTUS think tank over the next few years .

In the 2018 parliamentary elections , he was on the list of Sociāldemokrātiskā partija "Saskaņa" , which he had previously joined. As the party's candidate for the office of prime minister, he was able to move into the Saeima again.
