Vienotība ( German unity , V for short ) is a political party in Latvia that was founded on August 6, 2011. It is about the amalgamation of the liberal-conservative parties Jaunais laiks , Pilsoniskā savienība and Sabiedrība citai politikai . Vienotība had been an electoral alliance since 2010 .
history
On January 29, 2009, a cooperation agreement between the three parties involved was concluded. At times, the parties of the Visu Latvijai alliance were also under discussion. On March 6, 2010 the founding congress of “Vienotība” took place. Ģirts Valdis Kristovskis was elected chairman and Valdis Dombrovskis was named as a possible candidate for the post of prime minister.
In the election for the 10th Saeima on October 2, 2010 , Vienotība was the strongest force in parliament with 31.22% of the vote and formed a coalition with the party alliance Latvijas Zemnieku savienība / Latvijas Zaļā partija (ZZS). As part of a rotation principle, Solvita endeboltiendea became chairwoman of the alliance in March 2011.
On August 6, 2011, Vienotība was founded as a party. In the parliamentary elections in September 2011 , the party received 18.8% of the vote and formed the new government with the Zatlera reformu partija and Nacionālā apvienība "Visu Latvijai!" - "Tēvzemei un Brīvībai / LNNK" (NA). Vienotība again placed the prime minister in Dombrovskis III's cabinet . After Dombrovskis' resignation on November 27, 2013, Laimdota Straujuma , also a member of the Vienotība and previously Minister of Agriculture in Dombrovskis III's cabinet, was elected as the new Prime Minister on January 22, 2014. She was the first woman to head Latvia's government and her cabinet included not only the members of the previous coalition partners but also those of the new additional partner ZZS.
In the European elections in Latvia in 2014 , the Vienotība achieved by far the best result of all parties with 46.2% of the vote; it won four of the eight Latvian seats in the European Parliament. In the election for the 12th Saeima in the same year Vienotība won 23 of the 100 seats. Laimdota Straujuma was then re-elected as Prime Minister of a coalition of Vienotība, ZZS and NA, but only stayed in office until 2016 and was replaced by Māris Kučinskis from the ZZS.
After various scandals and splits, the party that ran for the 2018 elections in the Jaunā Vienotība (New Unity) alliance together with several small regional parties suffered considerable losses. However, the new alliance managed to (re) enter the Latvian parliament with 6.69% and was able to send 8 members. With Krišjānis Kariņš , the party - although it is the smallest of the five coalition partners - was able to provide the prime minister again. She also holds the posts of Foreign Minister ( Edgars Rinkēvičs ) and Finance Minister ( Jānis Reirs ).
