history

The PS had been part of the Latvian government coalition under Valdis Dombrovskis ( JL ) since early 2009 and provided Defense Minister Imants Viesturs Lieģis . Party leader was Sandra Kalniete , former Latvian Foreign Minister and member of the European Commission .

In the European elections in Latvia in 2009 , in which the PS competed for the first time, it won over 24% of the votes and was thus the winner. She won two seats in the European Parliament that joined the Group of the European People's Party (Christian Democrats) . The PS itself had been a full member of the European People's Party (EPP) since 2010 .

In the elections for Saeima on October 2, 2010, the citizens' union took part in the election alliance Vienotība (unity) together with Jaunais Laiks and a small party. The alliance together won 31.2% of the vote and 33 of the 100 deputy seats in the unicameral parliament .
