Imants Viesturs Lieģis
Imants Viesturs Lieģis (born April 30, 1955 in Meriden (West Midlands) ) is a Latvian diplomat and politician. Lieģis was Latvian Defense Minister from 2009 to 2010. He has a seat on the Executive Board of the European Leadership Network .
Live and act
Lieģis studied law at the University of Newcastle Upon Tyne , where he graduated in 1976 with an LL.B. from. From 1979 to 1991 he was an attorney at the Supreme Court of England and Wales . He then worked for 17 years as a diplomat for the Latvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including as ambassador to Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg (1997–1999), permanent representative of Lithuania to NATO (2003–2004) and the Political and Security Committee of the EU (2005– 2008). From March 2009 to November 2010 he was Latvia's Minister of Defense. In 2010 he was elected to the Latvian Parliament for the Pilsoniskā savienība , where he was chairman of the Committee on European Affairs and chairman of the delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly until 2011 .
Lieģis is married and has two daughters.
