Kalkstrasse, view to the southwest

The Kalkstraße ( Latvian Kaļķu iela ) is a street in the Latvian capital Riga .

It runs from southwest to northeast with a length of about 400 meters through Riga's old town and is designed as a pedestrian zone . In the southwest it begins at the Town Hall Square ( Rātslaukums ) by the Riga Town Hall and ends on the Freedom Boulevard ( Brīvības bulvaris ) into which it merges. The shopping street ( Tirgoņu iela ) joins from the north near the town hall . On the south side of the Scharrenstrasse ( Skārņu iela ) goes off. Not far from the eastern end it is crossed by Wall Street ( Vaļņu iela ). Another 200-meter-long section leading over the Rathausplatz to the southwest is also counted as Kalkstraße, but originally formed the Schalstraße ( Svērtuves iela ).

The name of the street goes back to a limestone deposit which was located in the eastern course of the street. In 1950 the street was renamed Lenin Street ( Ļeņina ielā ) and the course was extended to include the adjacent streets, including Schalstraße. In 1989 it got its original name back, although the numbering of Leninstrasse was retained, so that Schalstrasse was also included.

Several of the buildings along the street are listed as the residential complex Kalkstraße 7, 9, the bank building Kalkstraße 15, the Muse society house at Kalkstraße 18 and the house at Kalkstraße 24. The Russian Theater Riga is located at Kalkstraße 16 . The monument to the Latvian riflemen is located on the westernmost section of the Kalkstrasse .
