Kaufstrasse (Riga)

The Kaufstrasse ( Latvian Tirgoņu iela ) is a street in the Latvian capital Riga .

It is located in Riga's old town and leads from Kalkstraße ( Kaļķu iela ) in the south in an arc to the north until, after a distance of about 170 meters, it meets Scheunenstraße ( Šķūņu iela ). The Riga City Hall is located on the corner of Kalkstrasse .

The road developed in the 14th century, the first documentary mention of it comes from 1333. In the Middle Ages, many traders were based in Kaufstraße . The street was one of the most important trading places in the city, from which the name of the street derives.

Several of the buildings along the street are listed buildings , such as the Kaufstrasse 5, 7, 9 residential complex and the Kaufstrasse 10 residential building.
