Covaleda is one of the few mountain towns in the province of Soria with a growing or almost constant population.
economy
Covaleda is located on the former road between Soria and Burgos , which is still used today . In addition to the usual self-sufficiency economy, goods and ideas came to the small town, where traders, craftsmen and service providers settled. Today summer tourism also plays a significant role in the economic life of the municipality.
history
Bronze Age and Celtiberian traces can be found in the region . The Romans , Visigoths and Moors , on the other hand, left no archaeologically usable traces. The verifiable history of the place goes back to the year 929, ie to the time of the Reconquista ; in 1095 the Castilian counts of Lara bequeathed the place to the monastery of San Millán de Lara . During the whole time Christians from the north but also from the south ( Mozarabians ) of the Iberian Peninsula settled the region. In 1923 a major fire destroyed almost all the houses in the town; they were then rebuilt.
Attractions
- The church of San Quirico y Santa Julitta is the hll. Consecrated to Quiricus and Julitta ; it is a three-aisled building with a bell tower in front (campanario) . The entrance is on the south side. The three equally high naves of the hall church are spanned by Gothic ribbed vaults. The church preserves a Romanesque baptismal font (pila bautismal) richly decorated with tendrils and several baroque carved altars (retablos) .
- Surroundings
- The Ermita de San Cristóbal , built in the 19th century, stands in the fields at the foot of the village.
- Approx. 1.5 km southeast of the village, a single-arched bridge made of stone (Puente de Soria) crosses the still young Duero. The approximately 11.50 m wide arch of the bridge is slightly pointed at the apex, which indicates a medieval origin; the current state corresponds to that of the 17th century.
- Another arch bridge (Puente de Santo Domingo) is upstream. It is dated to the 12th century, but was restored with new stones at the beginning of the 21st century.
- Several more recent simple bridges are also among the community's attractions.
