The mechanization of agriculture and the abandonment of small farms led to a loss of jobs since the 1960s, which in turn triggered an exodus of the population to the cities ( rural exodus ).
economy
With the exception of barley , hardly any grain was possible to grow on the barren soils of the cold plateaus of the Soria province . For centuries, the population lived from the breeding of sheep and goats, from whose milk cheese was made, which after laborious transport could be sold in the markets or exchanged for flour, etc. The wool of the sheep was spun and in winter it was woven into lengths of fabric from which simple clothing was made. Goat hair was only suitable for making weatherproof throws ( ponchos ) or sacks, ropes, etc. Today, hiking and recreational tourism play an important role.
history
Celts , Romans , Visigoths and even the Moors left no archaeologically usable traces; it was probably hunters and shepherds who first discovered the high valley.
Attractions
- The small parish church of the village (Iglesia de San Pedro Apóstol) dates from the 15th to 18th centuries; its bell tower (campanar) only slightly rises above the church. The interior shows a Gothic ribbed vault in the choir area and an altarpiece (retablo) from the Renaissance period .
- On a round stepped base in front of the church rises a pillar of square plan with a wrought-iron cross at the top.
- On the southern outskirts is the Cruz de Canto , a wayside cross built in the early 20th century, near which there is a viewpoint (mirador) .
